Detroit Medical Center / Wayne State University School of Medicine Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program's Mission and Vision

Mission Statement

Taking a cue from famous Detroiter, Aretha Franklin, the focus of our mission statement can be summed up by one word: RESPECT.

R – Reproductive Justice

E – Equitable Care

S – Surgical Excellence

P – Patient-centered

E – Evidence-based

C – Culture of Compassion

T – Teaching

Our mission is to train the next generation of obstetricians and gynecologists who will transform women's healthcare through equitable, compassionate, unbiased care. We are committed to developing physicians who serve our patients with unwavering dedication, practicing evidence-based medicine and achieving surgical excellence. Our program is built on patient-centered care, where compassionate treatment guides every decision, and we champion reproductive justice as a fundamental right. We embrace diversity and equality in all interactions, creating an inclusive environment that strengthens our ability to serve Detroit's vibrant communities through unprejudiced, culturally responsive medicine.

With a teaching environment focused on resident feedback and personal attention, we cultivate skilled, confident, and empathetic physicians who combine clinical expertise with social consciousness. Our residents develop technical skills and clinical judgment while fostering critical thinking grounded in the latest scientific evidence. We pledge to graduate leaders in women's healthcare—physicians who will advocate for their patients and profession, continue to learn and innovate throughout their careers, and work to improve maternal and reproductive health outcomes while addressing systemic inequities that affect healthcare for all.

Serving Detroit. Advancing medicine. Transforming lives.

Vision Statement

We envision a transformative obstetrics and gynecology residency program that stands as a beacon of excellence, equity, and innovation in Detroit and beyond. Our program will be recognized as a premier destination for medical education, where we cultivate compassionate advocates who are deeply engaged with the Detroit community and committed to building lasting trust through patient-centered care that honors each individual's unique needs and circumstances.

We aspire to be the leading force in reducing healthcare inequities by eliminating barriers to care, connecting patients to essential resources, and championing the rights of patients across all gender identities and marginalized communities. Through our unwavering commitment to evidence-based medicine and surgical excellence, we will establish ourselves as a center of clinical distinction while training the next generation of skilled clinicians without ever compromising the quality of patient care.

Our vision encompasses creating a thriving, collaborative environment where interdisciplinary teams flourish, work-life balance is valued, and every member of our community can reach their full potential. We will expand knowledge in obstetrics and gynecology through comprehensive education of medical students and our healthcare colleagues, while advancing our field through cutting-edge translational research that bridges the gap between discovery and clinical application.

Ultimately, we strive to create a better Detroit Medical Center and contribute to a better world—one where reproductive healthcare is accessible, equitable, and excellent for all. Through advocacy, innovation, and unwavering dedication to our community, we will transform not only how obstetric and gynecologic care is delivered, but also how it is perceived, valued, and advanced in our city and beyond.
